Swim Test: New swimmers to SDST will need to take a swim test before starting their first practice. Swim test is swimming the length of the pool (25 yds.) without stopping. Any stroke or way is acceptable (even dog paddle). Swim tests will be held on TBD
Volunteering is essential to run home swim meets, parents will be asked to sign up to volunteer during the registration process. Please review the volunteer positions listed below. A change from prior years, there will be 2 timers and 1 writer per lane and there will be only 1 shift. To help out with this, the swimmers 14 and older who are not swimming an IM will be asked to help out with timing/writing.
You can sign up for a job on swimtopia under the tab “Swim Meets”, select the swim meet you will be available to volunteer and click “job sign up”. You can then pick which job you would like to volunteer for. By doing this ahead of time it will help the swim meet start on time and stay on schedule.
No experience is needed to volunteer, new families are welcome and encouraged to volunteer. Timing, writing, runner, place picker, head timer are all positions you can do. Here is a quick rundown of the jobs.
Timer: operating a stopwatch at the start and finish for the swimmer in your lane.
Writer: write down the times for each swimmer in your lane.
Head Timer: Start extra stopwatches as a backup to anyone who may have missed the start.
Runner: picking up time slips from each lane and taking them to the scorekeeper.
Place picker: watching the finish to see what order the swimmers came in.
Officials are parent volunteers. We are always in need of officials. If you are interested, please reach out to us and we will be happy to help you get started. There is a Stork Judge Clinic on TBD
Coaches: Zach Schab will be returning as our Head Coach (13 and up) and Jessica Cavanaugh will be returning as an Assistant Coach (8 and unders). We are in need of another Assistant Coach to teach the 9-12 year olds. If you know someone or would like to apply yourself, application will be available shortly.
Team Swimsuits will be available for purchase on Swimtopia. The team suit will be same as last year. There will be swimsuit try-on day on TBD at the Selah Aquatic Center. (Team swimsuits are optional.)
Other important dates coming up:
Pool Clean-Up: 5/6/23 from 8:00 to 12:00pm.
Ice Cream Social: Friday 6/9/23 from 4:45 to 5:15pm at the Selah Pool.
AAU: This is a fun meet and kids have the opportunity to win lots of ribbons. More information will come as we get closer to it.
Championships:
Championships will be held in Selah this year on Friday night 7/28/23, Saturday 7/29/23 and Sunday 7/30/23. More information will come as we get closer to it. Swimmers must attend 50% of the meets to qualify for Championships.
Swim Meets:
All the swim meets for the season are listed on the schedule. Swimmers must sign up for events they plan on swimming on Swimtopia. You can go into each swim meet and indicate if the swimmer will be present, what events they plan on swimming, and if they will be available for a relay. The coaches will use this information to assign heats/lanes and set up relays. Please have your swimmers signed up by 6:00 pm the day before the meet. Signing up will also help the scorekeeper enter their times.
8 and unders do not swim relays. 8 and unders may start on the block, pool deck or in the water if they are not comfortable diving into the water.
Rain policy: We practice and compete in rain. We don't if there is lightening or if the lifeguards determine it is unsafe, for example if it is raining so hard, they can't see the bottom of the pool.
Meet nights can go late if they are swimming all 4 strokes (10:00 pm or later sometimes). Meets ended early last year because they were all virtual and only our swimmers swam in our pool. Bring warm clothes, extra towels, and snacks. Yes, there is practice the next morning.
Each event is youngest to oldest, girls followed by boys.
For example, 8 and under girls followed by 8 and under boys, then 9/10 girls followed by 9/10 boys and so on with 11/12, 13/14, 15/16, 17/18.
Event Order:
Medley relay (no 8 and unders)
Butterfly
Breaststroke
Backstroke
Freestyle
Free Relay (no 8 and unders)
Individual Medley (no 8 and unders)
The 8 and unders swim one length of the pool. Most pools are 25-yards, except for Grandview which is a 40-yard pool and Sunnyside and Toppenish which is a 50 meter pool.
Swimmers must swim in their age group, the age they were as of June 1st. If your swimmer has a birthday after June 1st, they will not advance into the next age group, they swim in the same age group for the entire season. (However, at AAU, they swim the age they are the day of the meet.)
